Monashlink Physiotherapy offers a six week, group session to help people who suffer from chronic lower back pain. The group aims to teach people exercises and strategies to help them manage their condition.
These groups are run by two physiotherapists with additional information provided by a psychologist and podiatrist.
Participants must first be assessed by a physio individually to ensure that this group is suitable for you.
Participants need to be able to get up and down to floor exercise mats independently.

The Falls and Balance group is designed for people who may have already had a fall or feel that their balance is not good and are at risk of falling. The group teaches you a series of exercises to practice that improve confidence and mobility. The group is led by a physiotherapist with information about other things that can affect balance provided by a community health nurse, podiatrist, and occupational therapist. The group runs over a five week period with two one hour sessions each week. Following the completion of the group, participants are encouraged to further improve their strength and balance at Strength Training.

Gentle exercise groups are chair based exercises for older people who want to improve their flexibility, co-ordination, muscle strength and balance. The groups are ideal for people and who have limited mobility. These sessions are run weekly at neighbourhood houses in the Monash community by Monashlink staff.

Hydrotherapy is a group exercise program in warm water to assist people who have difficulty exercising on land. Hydrotherapy can improve fitness, relieve pain, improve muscle strength and joint mobility. The group is led by a physiotherapist assisted by Allied Health Assistants and volunteers. The exercises are taught over a ten week period and participants are encouraged to continue this type of exercise independently at the completion of this program.
If you suffer from arthritis, joint replacements, chronic pain or general weakness, you may benefit from this type of exercise.
All classes are held at the Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre, where the pool is at 34 degrees Celcius. These are excellent facilities.
Some transport is available for those who cannot travel on their own.

MonashLink promotes health and wellbeing and encourages volunteers and clients to participate in the Saturday Self Help Walking group.
Come and enjoy a walk, meet new people and discover the City of Monash and surrounding Melbourne. Walks take place at various parks including:
• Valley Reserve
• Scotchman’s Creek
• Mulgrave
• Shepherd’s Bush
• Blackburn Lake
The duration of these walks are approximately 5-6km over a 90minute period.
The terrain ranges from flat, flat with slight rise, a hill to hilly. You will be able to select the walks that will suit you. Volunteers provide support and encouragement.
Date: Saturday mornings from February to December
Meeting time: 8.25am to start at 8.30am
Fee: None
Prior to commencement walkers are required to consult their general practitioner regarding their suitability to participate.

Strength training is a one hour group exercise program aimed at improving bone and muscle strength and flexibility. The group is run by a Physiotherapist and Allied Health Assistant and is suitable for older adults.
Strength training uses small weights and exercises to target all muscle groups. It is shown to be beneficial in the treatment of Diabetes, Heart Disease and Arthritis. Regular exercise will also increase an overall sense of well being and general fitness. Participants progress at their own pace to achieve and maintain their fitness.

Tai Chi is sometimes described as yoga in motion. Regular practise of Tai Chi can assist flexibility, muscle strength and ability to cope with chronic conditions.
Monashlink's Tai Chi program is run over 22 weeks by our physiotherapist and Allied Health Assistant, who demonstrate the 12 basic movements of Tai Chi progressing from beginner to intermediate levels.
Tai chi can benefit anyone who has

• Poor balance
• General weakness

The Mulgrave Planned Activity Group is for people with limited social opportunities or independently living older adults, who meet to enjoy each others company, outings to community events and venues and who enjoy some gentle exercise and healthy food.
The group is run by Allied Health Assistants and volunteers. There is an initial interview by the group co-ordinator to ensure that this group is suitable for you. The group runs from Mulgrave Community Hall in Wellington Road, Mulgrave each Friday from 10.00am to 2.30pm.
