needle exchange
Needle and Syringe Programs are a public health measure to reduce the spread of blood born viral infections such as HIV and Hepatitis C amongst injecting drug users, but also within the general community. These programs are supported by the National Drug Strategy's harm minimisation framework.
Monashlink Community Health Service operates the only fixed site Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) in the City of Monash. The Needle Syringe Program provides a range of services including the provision of sterile injecting equipment, education and information on reducing harm associated with drug use and referrals to the Eastern Drug and Alcohol Service (EDAS) and/or other services. The NSP is also an important point for collection and disposal of used injecting equipment.
The Monashlink NSP is operated from the Hughesdale site (568 Neerim Rd) by reception staff, between the hours of 8.30am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
For access to a NSP outside of these hours, please contact the Community Health Outreach Program Eastern Region (CHOPER) on 0414 266 203. The CHOPER team can be reached between 7.30pm and 11.00pm every night of the year. CHOPER provides sterile equipment and also accepts returns of used equipment.
