occupational therapy
Occupational therapy can assist the younger person with a disability or an older person to continue living in their own home with increased independence, safety and comfort. Occupational therapists also work with children to assist development – refer to Children services.
The occupational therapist visits you in your own home and looks at the following areas.
• Access to your home – stairs, ramps, railings;
• Personal care- bed set-up, showering, dressing, toilet and transfers on and off chairs;
• Domestic activities such as cooking and cleaning;
• Community accessing – shopping, paying bills, banking.
If any area is becoming difficult to manage then an Occupational Therapist can look at ways to increase independence and safety through the supply of aids and equipment, new ways to complete tasks and linking into other services.
