Parkinson's Support Group

Parkinson’s disease is has been diagnosed in approximately 20,000 people in Victoria. The condition affects not only the individual but also their carers, families and friends. The group is run by the MonashLink Community Health Nurse and meets monthly to share ideas with those in similar situations, discuss various issues about living with Parkinson’s and to gain information and access resources to enhance quality of life. The Parkinsons Support Group meets at the Mount Street Neighourhood House in Glen Waverley.

Stroke Support Group

The Monash Stroke Support Group (MSSG) consists of Volunteers identifying community needs and is proudly supported by MonashLink Community Health Service. This group was initiated in 2001 by the MonashLink Volunteer Network. The purpose of the MSSG is to provide health education, social support and self empowerment to stroke affected people and their families. The MSSG Program includes a range of guest speakers, social events and outings. Stroke affected people, families and carers are welcome to attend.

Cancer Support Group

MonashLink’s Cancer Support group has been running for more than 21 years. The support group provides an opportunity for people touched by cancer to meet with others who have had similar experiences. The group provides social, emotional and educational support.

MonashLink hosts a ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ annually. This event is supported by the Victorian Cancer Council and raises money for cancer research. This event is coordinated by the members of the cancer support group.

Motorised Scooter Support Group

The Motorised Scooter Support Group is run by a MonashLink Social Worker and and Occupational Therapist. The group provides an opportunity for motorised scooter drivers to socialise, to share experiences, access information & resources, advocate for increased community awareness and enhance confidence in accessing the community. This group is run at the Hughesdale Community hall, corner of Poath Road and Kangaroo Road, Hughesdale (Melway ref: 69C7).

The group aims to give practical assistance to participants through identifying and solving communication barriers in the home, with family or carers and in the community and improving confidence in communicating through practice, support and skill training.

Glen Waverley Support Group

The Family Support Program of the Eastern Drug and Alcohol Service (EDAS) offers support, education and information for families, friends and carers in Melbourne’s East whose lives are affected by alcohol or drug use. The program aims to improve skills in self care, conflict resolution and problem solving as well as developing the family’s existing strengths. The program provides support through individual and/or family counselling, and in addition runs a monthly support group.

The Glen Waverley Family Support Group meets monthly and offers group support as well as information and education as directed by the group. Opportunities are provided for group members to share experiences with others in a relaxed and safe environment, with guest speakers and education sessions arranged as required.

Chat 'n Connect Communication Group

A Speech Pathologist from MonashLink and a Social Worker from Moorefields Community Rehabilitation Service, provide a group opportunity for people with moderate communication impairments to practice and learn new skills in a supportive environment.

This group is beneficial for people with a verbal communication difficulty. The group aims to give practical assistance to participants through identifying and solving communication barriers in the home, with family or carers and in the community. The group also aims to improve confidence in communicating through practice, support and skill training.

The program provides an opportunity to meet other people with a communication difficulty, share experiences, develop strategies to enhance confidence and to access information and resources to support communicative interaction with family, friends and the borader community. Carers are also welcome to attend this group.
